I mentioned our Family Day this past Saturday. The Family Foundation School’s middle school students had a wonderful display set up – showcasing their artwork, science projects and community service work.
Diane, our middle school coordinator, wrote the following brief note of thanks: I wanted to thank you all for the time you took to make the display such a success. I have received so many wonderful comments about it from other staff members, administration, and visitors this weekend. The boys were so excited to put it together, and I know they are appreciative of your help, and your time.
Although small, our middle school program, is a great addition to the school – and provides the younger students opportunities for growth and development through alot of individual attention. I facilitate a weekly group with the middle schoolers – an age I love to work with. As a therapist, it is certainly not your typical group. The following is a summary of a group I facilitated two weeks ago:
…since the weather was so nice, the group wanted to hike a bit into the woods to go searching for frogs and anything that crawled. Troy reluctantly came along, since he does not like to touch dirt or anything outside, especially bugs, frogs, salamanders, etc. Mike and Jim on the other hand can’t get enough of that. The boys did really well – they were well behaved, had fun and even was supportive of Troy – encouraged him to be involved, touch the frog, etc but did not push him and respected his “no way”, and to Troy’s credit, he did more than he would have so he continues to expand his experiences. We searched at the pond, then went to the camp fire site and followed a meandering brook down the hill, found a frog, found a natural “chia pet” (named Henry that is now in the middle school), got wet and dirty, and the highlight was the combined effort of the four of us successfully pushing over and eventually felling a dead tree. The discussions were varied but positive – a good time of bonding and getting to know one another.
Obviously, it is a BOYS’ group!
